4/7/22 Congratulations to Thomas Hsu and Aarush Behera

Two MCPASD students are 2022 Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) Student Composition Project Award Winners!

Thomas Hsu, a junior at Middleton High School, placed first in the Instrumental Solo division for High School with his original composition, Elegy for Solo Violin in Bb Minor.

Aarush Behera, 7th-grader at Kromrey Middle School, placed second in the Piano Solo division for grades 7 & 8 with his original composition, The Bee.

The Student Composition Project recognizes creativity and encourages student musicians to apply what they learn in their music classes to their original music compositions.

Students submit original compositions evaluated by WSMA judges on the melody, rhythm, harmony, orchestration, form, expression, use of proper notation, creativity & originality, and overall musical effect.

Mr. Steve Kurr, Thomas Hsu's teacher, said, "These students put in a tremendous amount of self-guided work, and the results are impressive. It's great to see what our music students can achieve when they put their minds to it."

Thomas and Aarush will receive awards at a special WSMA ceremony where they will have the opportunity to present their competition. They will also receive a $200 scholarship that may be used for Composition lessons, Composition software/equipment, and Professional level experience.

Thomas and Aarush are taught by MCPASD Orchestra teachers, Mr. Steve Kurr and Ms. Nancy Kurr.

Congratulations, Thomas Hsu and Aarush Behera!
